Telemedicine Q&A

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine means medical care through the latest technology. With telemedicine, you communicate with Family Medical Center using an app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Thanks to telemedicine appointments, you can see your health care provider in real time (and they can see you), but you never need to leave your home.

What kind of services does telemedicine offer?

Telemedicine is a viable alternative for many general and urgent medical needs. Some of the many reasons you might schedule a telemedicine appointment with Family Medical Center include:

  • Colds
  • Flu
  • Bronchitis
  • Sore throat
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Urinary tract infection
  • High blood pressure
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Arthritis
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Poison ivy
  • Insect bites
  • Skin rashes
  • Sprains and strains

These are only some of the many conditions that Family Medical Center can address with telemedicine appointments. You can also schedule a telemedicine appointment if you’re due for a prescription refill or for other routine care.

If you’re wondering if telemedicine care can help with your current concern or condition, simply call the office to inquire.

What happens during my telemedicine appointment?

You connect with your Family Medical Center provider through a secure app. You discuss your symptoms and concerns while your provider asks questions and evaluates you over video.

Depending on the situation, your provider may direct you to do a self-exam or focus the camera on a certain area. For example, if they suspect an infection in an arm puncture, your provider may ask you to move the camera so they can observe the wound to look for the telltale signs of infection.

If you’re already a patient, Family Medical Center has immediate access to your records and can review those during the appointment.

Depending on the circumstances, you might require testing outside the home, such as blood draws or ultrasound imaging. You can still get those services on-site at Family Medical Center, so your provider will let you know if that’s necessary.

Should you need a prescription or other specific care, your provider can contact your pharmacy of choice with the prescription information so you can have it delivered or pick it up.

Will insurance cover my telemedicine appointment?

Most major insurance companies, including Medicare, cover telemedicine. If you don’t have insurance coverage, telemedicine can be an affordable and convenient way to receive medical attention when you need it most.
