Sore Throat Q&A

What is a sore throat?

A sore throat is a common health problem that involves an itchy, dry, or painful feeling in your throat. Every year, about 13 million Americans visit the doctor to seek treatment for this condition.

Some sore throats develop as a result of a bacterial or viral infection; others occur due to environmental factors such as pollution. Doctors separate sore throats into three separate categories, depending on the part of your throat that’s affected.

  • Pharyngitis affects the area of your throat directly behind your mouth
  • Tonsillitis affects your tonsils
  • Laryngitis is swelling that affects your voice box or larynx

Regardless of the type of sore throat you have, if it doesn’t respond to rest or other conservative treatments, visit Family Medical Center right away.

What are the symptoms of a sore throat?

The symptoms of a sore throat vary from person to person and depend on the underlying cause. If you have a sore throat, you might experience feelings such as:

  • Burning
  • Itching
  • General irritation
  • Tenderness

If you have a sore throat, you might also experience pain when you swallow or talk.

What causes a sore throat?

Sore throats develop for a variety of reasons. Family Medical Center regularly diagnoses and treats sore throats caused by:

  • Colds and the flu
  • Strep throat
  • Allergies
  • Dry air
  • Smoke, chemicals, and irritants
  • Injury
  • Tumors

Family Medical Center also diagnoses and treats sore throats caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

How is the cause of a sore throat diagnosed?

To diagnose the cause of a sore throat, your Family Medical Center provider does a physical exam and asks about your symptoms. They also point a light down your throat to look for redness, swelling, or white spots. If your provider suspects you have strep throat, they also take a sample and send it to a laboratory for further testing. If the result of your sample is inconclusive your provider can also do a rapid strep test in-office.

How is a sore throat treated?

Most sore throats respond to conservative measures of care, such as drinking warm tea and getting plenty of rest. If you have a bacterial infection like strep, you might also get antibiotics. If your sore throat persists for days or even weeks, your doctor might recommend a follow up appointment or a biopsy if there’s an unusual growth.

Don’t let a sore throat prevent you from living your best life. To request an appointment at Family Medical Center today, call the office or click the online booking tool.
